The first thing you should do before getting a tattoo is to visit several tattoo studios in your area and talk to the artist, ask questions about choosing a tattoo design, getting tattoo design ideas and generally about the process, health risks involved and removing a tattoo later if needed. Do some research before making a decision about getting a tattoo. Find out how long they have been in business, do they belong to the better business bureau? if so call the BBB and see if there are any complaints against them.
Find out about the tattoo artists experience. See some of their designs and talk with someone that has used them, if possible. You want to be sure that the artist uses new, clean needles with every client.
You will want to know if the artist guarantees their work, that it will be fixed if there is something you don't like about it. Find out also if there is a refund policy in place so if you just don't like the way that the tattoo came out that you can get a refund. Also, find out how much the tattoo will cost before you get it. Tattoos can be expensive depending on the quality of the work, the experience of the artist and the size and complexity of the design. Even very small tattoos can cost a lot.
The tattoo artist should be able to tell you about infections and how to prevent them. Also if you get an infection, what to do about it. Prevention is best but sometimes infection does occur, even if you are careful.
If your tattoo artist hesitates in answering your questions or doesn't know the answers, it is time to find another artist. Always choose the artist that is friendly, knows the answers to your questions and does quality work.
